An overview of the tradition of Western classical architecture from the Renaissance to Art Nouveau. The architectural, cultural, and philosophical relevance of key monuments and theories are introduced within the broad spectrum of the history of ideas and material civilizations. Students gain concrete insight into architectural disciplines based on the classical orders, as well as a broad understanding of the historical traditions and modern principles of Western architecture by surveying the rediscovery of the classical architecture and its basic ideas during the Renaissance, and by focusing on the emergence of modernity and the concurrent transformations in architectural theories and practice.
