건축의 역사적, 사회적, 지역적, 정책적 상관관계 및 상호영향 등을 이해하기 위한 보편적 교과목으로 물리적 환경과 인간 행동 간의 관계를 탐색하는 과정부터 건축과 도시의 지속가능성에 대한 이해에 이르기까지 건축이 포섭하는 영역을 총체적으로 이해하기 위한 교과목이다. 특히 다양한 건축이론과 역사에 대한 이해를 기반으로 사회구조와 전통, 각종 사상적 기초 등이 어떻게 건축에 포섭되어 있는가를 묻고 대답하는 방식의 강의로 이루어지며, 문화적 맥락이라는 차원에서 건축의 위치를 재확인하고 다양한 참고문헌을 통해 단편적 지식을 구조화 하는 방법론을 습득한다.

The course emphasizes the role of architecture as a container of society and culture, and guides students to a critical understanding of the interaction between the physical environment and the values of individuals and groups, and customs of diverse cultures. Students read articles on critical issues of the contemporary culture and discuss about them. The course will help students to be familiar with the way architecture is represented, shared of theory and practiced in the wider culture as well as the way architecture responds to certain representations. Students are trained to have a critical thinking of architecture and culture.
