건축과 도시라는 이원적 공간 환경의 인식에서 탈피하여 도시공간과 건축을 통합적 공간으로 이해하기 위한 다양한 이론과 역사적 선례들을 통해 건축의 공공성과 사회적 집합공간의 구축 의미와 이념, 이론들을 연구한다. 특히, 도시계획과 건축의 분리현상과 이의 재통합적 현상으로서의 도시설계 개념과 이론들을 중심으로 건축으로부터 도시에 이르는 접점공간의 의미를 공공성에 주목하여 구체적으로 살피고, 도시계획과 건축의 중간영역으로 구분되는 도시설계와 지구단위계획의 다양한 이론과 건축설계에의 적용수법 등을 연구한다.

The course seeks to assist students to understand the theories and precedents in history of urbanism and architecture; the interaction between the city and architecture; the dynamics of the city as a social context and force in architectural design; the correlations between the city and architecture as reflected in regulations as demonstrated in practice; especially city planning, urban design and district unit planning in housing design.
