국제적으로 인정되는 건축사가 되기 위해서는 최소 5년간의 설계중심의 건축학 교과과정을 이수해야 한다. 국제적 경쟁력을 갖추기 위하여 서울시립대학교 건축학전공 프로그램은 2002년부터 5년제로 전환하여 운영되고 있으며, 교과과정의 체계와 교육내용도 국제기준에 부합하도록 개편하였다.
교과내용은 크게 문화적 맥락, 설계, 기술, 실무 등의 영역으로 구분하고 세계건축가연맹(UIA)이 인정하는 국제기준에 부합하도록 필수과목을 지정하였고 최저 이수학점을 158학점으로 설정하였다. 이와 더불어 도시와 조경분야 뿐만 아니라 도시과학분야의 다양한 과목 선택을 가능하게 하여 전공 내의 심화학습이 이루어지고 있다.

건축학전공 신입생을 위한 교육목표는 이전까지의 관습적 사고방식과 선입견에서 벗어나 열린 시각으로 사고하고 소통할 수 있는 기초를 마련하는 데 있다. 1학년 교과과정은 쓰기와 말하기위주의 교양과정들의 기초 논리사고력 강화와 함께, 기초 전공강좌들의 시각적 소통과 창의적 사고 고취 교육을 통하여 건축 입문자들의 균형적 사고를 함양시킨다.

The goal of the freshmen year is to break existing preconceptions; to help students see and think with fresh eyes and an open mind. With most of the first-year curriculum taken up by University Core courses to build up the fundamental logical reasoning ability, it is up to the Elementary Design Studios and introductory courses to open up these new avenues. These two studios focus on educating visual communication and creative thinking to cultivate the balanced thinking among the new beginners.

2학년 과정에서는 공간성격의 인문배경과 기본 원리를 다양한 관점에서 교육하기 시작한다. 건축교육의 근간이 되는 역사교육과 공간 프로그래밍, 물리적 특질인 구조, 재료에 대한 기본학습이 이론교과와 설계교과에서 동시 통합적으로 이루어진다. 또한 디지털 미디어에 대한 기본 학습도 이 단계에서부터 시작된다.

The second year is effectively the first full year of the architectural curriculum. While the studio sequence finalizes its core goals, students are exposed to a variety of views in the humanities and historical aspects of architecture. Students are taught the basics of the architectural history, the architectural program, the physicality including structures and materials, and the use of digital tools. They are educated through the integrated and synchronized curriculum of theory courses and design studios.

본격적인 전공 심화과정의 시작으로, 테크놀로지와 관련되는 기술심화과목, 주거론,행태,문화등 확대된 건축인문과목, 환경친화건축과 대지계획등이 소개된다. 또한 다변화하는 사회에서 전문가로서의 유연성과 차별화된 수월성을 높이기 위한 다각적인 융합과 협력 교육이 시도된다. 3학년 이상의 학생들이 다양한 특별 프로그램에 참여하도록 권장하고 있다.

While the design sequence begins its Advanced Studios, the lecture courses continue its emphasis on history and culture, and at the same time introduces issues of advanced building technology, site planning and sustainability. As the diversified society demands flexible professionals and differentiated talents, students are encouraged to attempt integration and collaboration in specialized design studios as well as in various extra-curricular activities.

4학년은 전반부의 도시로 확장되는 심화과정과 후반부 전문과정 시작으로 구성된다. 도시설계에 대한 이론학습과 지속가능한 도시건축에 대한 설계학습이 동시에 이루어지고 역사이론심화 교육이 전공선택으로 제공되어 건축학전공 심화과정을 완성한다. 건축법규, 현장인턴십과 같이 건축의 현실과 실천적 측면을 다루는 교육이 설비, 환경 실무기술교육과 함께 종합설계 교육을 지원한다.

The first half of the year is to expand the horizon of advanced studio toward urbanism, and the latter half is to introduce the professional studio. Students get to complete the advanced stages of architecture program with the urban design theory course and the design studio on sustainable urbanism as well as advanced undergraduate seminars and courses. While the curriculum on architectural reality and practice are provided, the comprehensive design education is supported by lecture courses on building codes, regulations, and mechanical systems. As part of its emphasis on practical training, students generally partake in their internship program during their fourth year.

건축학사 졸업설계와 전시에 초점을 둔 독자적 사고 훈련과 다양한 진로 탐색, 심화전공을 위한 영역 심화 교육으로 구성되는 전문과정 최종단계이다. 전공 필수 과목을 최소로 배정하여 사회진출에 앞선 학생들이 다양한 선택과목을 수강할 수 있는 과정이다. 이는 심화 전문 과정안에서도 학생 개개인의 진로에 맞춘 선택적 학습이 가능하도록 한 모델이다.

It is the final stage of the professional studio by training independent thinking devoted to the B-Arch Thesis studio and exhibition and by developing professionalism with diverse career exploration and intensive major courses for specific disciplines. Students have the minimized major mandatory courses, and they are provided leeway to independently explore their career paths in their final year of school. The goal is to offer selective studies keyed to individual career paths in the advanced professional studio.
